Who?
Matilda Kalving is a doctoral researcher at Tampere University at the Computing Sciences in the Human-Centered Technology (IHTE) research group, part of the Tampere University Computer-Human Interaction (TAUCHI) research center. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Industrial Design from the University of Lapland, where she was awarded the prima master title for academic excellence. In 2024, she was accepted into the highly competitive Finnish Doctoral Program Network in Artificial Intelligence (AI-DOC).
A multidisciplinary background in design and the arts. In addition to her degree in Industrial Design, Matilda has worked in theatre licensing, graphic design, the television industry, and the design sector. She has exhibited artwork at festivals and exhibitions, and contributed to interdisciplinary projects and shows.
Experienced HCI and design researcher. Before joining Tampere University as a doctoral researcher, she spent six years with the Lapland UX Design (LUX) group at the University of Lapland as a coordinator, designer, grant writer, and research assistant. She has reviewed for respected journals and conferences, including, but not limited to NordiCHI, MUM, and IJHCS, chairs the PerDis 2026 pictorials track, and has volunteered at ACM DIS, Augmented Humans, MindTrek, and Cumulus conferences.
Researching human–AI interaction at the crossroads of design and emergent technology. Her current work explores how generative AI tools shape artistic and design processes, with particular interests in human–AI interaction, tangible prototyping, computational creativity, design friction, and the role of craft and identity in technological change.
